Concussion Seminar - March 25th - 7:00PM

I am pleased to invite you and your sport community to a concussion seminar at Northumberland Regional High School on March 25, 2014 at 7pm. Please share with your coaches, parents, players and volunteers.

We have an excellent lineup of speakers including Drs. MacLachlan, Cudmore and Petrie as well as the sports therapist, Angela Wylie, from St FX. Drs MacLachlan and Cudmore will provide information on history, signs, symptoms, return to play, etc while Dr Petrie will be providing a succinct overview of neuroimaging- what's in, what's not, the past, present and future of the neuro side of concussions. We also have a compelling story of a former high school hockey player, Ben Gray, who suffered successive concussions. He is still struggling with his recovery as a St. Mary's student. It should be quite an evening! We also hope to have an educator from the school speak on "return to learn" and the impact concussions have had on the school-numbers, exam exemptions, etc.

After the session, there will be training for some interested parents and volunteers so that all of our athletes will be able to have a SCAT score test performed prior to contact sport.

My goal in wanting to organize this is to raise awareness of the seriousness of concussions and to have all of our student athletes tested prior to their participation in school sport. It serves as a baseline tool to compare with the scat score that is done on presentation to hospital after an injury. (A tool that was not available for our son when he suffered a serious concussion that saw him take months to recover! His story is, happily, a success story! He will graduate in June and attend NSCC to study Welding Inspection and Quality Control in the fall. Also, after missing a year from hockey, he has been able to return and contribute to a sport he loves!)

I hope you are interested- we have worked very hard to provide knowledgeable, cutting edge information. Ben's first person contribution should be quite compelling and chilling!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you in advance for your support.
