Crushers Thank Their Fans
It is hard to believe the Maritime Hockey League regular season is in its last two weeks. The Weeks Jr A Crushers want to send a sincere note of appreciation to their fans, who are at the top of the most loyal fans in the MHL, which is evidenced by the Crushers continuing to be at or near the top of the attendance standings. After successive Bent Division championships, the Crushers entered the year with a younger crop of players and only seven returning players, however the fans stayed true and continued to support the team and have played a large part in the team’s success this year. "We really didn't know what to expect, we knew we'd have some difficult evenings with a younger group, but our fans stuck with us, and helped in our process. It’s safe to say we have some of the best fans in the league" quotes Head Coach Jason Malone.
The Crushers currently sit third in the very tight Bent division standings and only have four games remaining. This week they host the second place Amherst Ramblers on Thursday night at 7:30 at the John Brother MacDonald Stadium. The games between the two teams this year have been very entertaining hockey, with fast hard hitting play. On Friday the Crushers travel to Yarmouth to play the first place Mariners. On February 23, the Crushers will host the Bridgewater Lumberjacks in their final home game of the season, before wrapping things up with a Saturday game in Truro. The Crushers look forward to the continued fan support and playoff push, so come out and be part of the team.
The Crushers are guaranteed a playoff spot, however they want to make a strong push to enjoy the highest placement they can entering the playoffs. Malone states "No one really expected much from our group this season, and to be honest, we were ok with that. We just wanted to make sure that the product we iced was going to allow us to be competitive. I had a reporter from the Island last summer ask me where we had hoped to finish in the standings this upcoming season. When I said 2nd or 3rd place, he said "ya right, when pigs fly". As a group, we kind of rallied around that comment, and actually made it our team slogan. Now, we're in the position to try and prove a few people wrong, hopefully we're up to the challenge".
All minor hockey players, wearing a Pictou County Minor Hockey Team Jersey will be granted free admission to the final two regular season games for the Crushers. As well the Crushers want to wish Pictou County Minor Hockey Association and all of the participating teams best wishes for this weekend’s Memorial Tournament. The Scotsburn Major Bantams will play host to the Major Bantam Division and the Pictou County Wonder Auto Bantam AA’s will host the AA division of the tournament. Please come out and show your support and enjoy the best of Bantam Hockey.
